AROUND MECLEOD GUNJ

How To ReachMcleodganj

you can getting a bus from travel agencies in Paharganj. The buses were quite new although some of them are quite small although brand new and because i`m quite big and tall the journey was reall uncomfortable for you.Anyway, you left around 17:00 or 18:00 i`m not sure and reached Dharamsala next morning around 5:30 . So it takes around 11 to 12 hours to reach the place.
have you considered the rail option? far more comfortable .

Delhi to Dharmashala
Delhi - Shimla
Shimla - Manali
Manali - Dharmashala
Dharmashala - Dalhousie

The jammu mail leaves new delhi around 9 in the evening and arrives early the next morning at pathankot giving a good chance to sleep (unlike the bus). It's then a nice 3-4 hour bus ride up into the hills

The Best Way to travel from Shimla to Manali by state transport bus or HPTDC deluxe coach(in season). You can book the former at the bus station on Cart road at Shimla and the latter at HPTDC tourist office at Scandal Point. The HPTDC office will also help you in organising a taxi to Manali, though this will be pretty expensive.

trains from Pathankot to Delhi
There are plenty of trains from Pathankot to Delhi; many of them convenient overnight ones. Some trains:
1. 4034 Jammu Mail, dep. 18=40, arr. 06=10
2. 4036 Dhauladhar Express, dep. 20=40, arr. 07=15
3. 4646 Shalimar Express, dep. 23=25, arr. 10=45
4. 1078 Jhelum Express, dep. 00=20, arr. 10=35
5. 2404 Delhi Express, dep. 20=00(from Chakki Bank), arr. 04=20

All these trains run daily.
You should also include Chamba in your trip, after Dalhousie and before Pathankot.
Amritsar - Mcleodganj (Dharamshala), palampur, kangra

I am planning to go to following places along with my family. My itinerary is as follows:-

27 Dec - Amritsar to Macleodganj
28, 29, 30 - Sight seeing in Dharamshala, Kangra and Palampur including Jawaladevi and other religious places.
31st leave for Manali and reach there
1 st & 2nd - Manali
3rd leave for shimla
4th Shimla - kalka
4th evening leave for Delhi or Patna

I request to kindly suggest whether my itinerary is ok and also request to suggest good budget hotels and places of interest. If any one can suggest a good travel agent from whom we can hire a car / sumo /
-> Dharamshala, McLeodganj, Palampur, Chintapurni, Chamunda, Jawalamukhi, Hamirpur, Deothsidh.

Chamunda Devi and Baijnath are very close to Dharamshala you can do both these places by afternoon, if you start in morning, then you may come to Jwalamukhi Temple have Darshans and leave for Chintpurni for a night stay.

Next morning you may visit the Chintpurni Temple and then go to Naina Devi (Use ropeway for saving time)...After that you may rush to Delhi.....may be with a quick stop at Anandpur Sahib....
you covered all these places in 4 days including Baba Balak Nath Temple at Dyotsiddh too...

Iwould recommend Kangra Fort and Masrur Rock Temple. Rawalsar is one of the most enchanting places that I have ever seen but it would be out of your way.

Attractions:
# Dharamshala/McLeodganj: list is huge,
lakes - Dall lake (11kms)
museums - Kangra art museum
Religious places - Church of St. John (8kms), Namgyal Monastery, Bhagsunath (11kms), Kunal Pathri (3kms), Chinmaya Tapovan (10kms)
Picnic spots - Dharamkot (11kms), Triund (17kms), Kareri (22kms)
# Palampur: Temple of Bundla Mata, Church of St. John, Gopalpur (small village, has a zoo), Chamunda Devi (18kms), Kangra fort (27kms), Al Hilal (palace, 11kms)
# remaining places mentioned have a significant cultural heritage, plenty of temples, shrines.
*******
Near Manali: Hadimba Devi Temple, Buddhist monasteries, Mineral water springs & Hot sulfur baths at Vashist (3kms), Arjun Gufa (4kms), Solang valley (14kms), Nehru Kund (6kms, small lake), Village of Kothi (12kms), Rahalla falls & Rohtang pass (51kms)
If you can, then do give a visit to Manikaran, there's a Gurudwara there, and also an ancient temple.
*******
Around Shimla
Around Shimla: plenty of places you can visit - Chail (50kms), Narkanda (70kms, Hatu peak, Thanedar & Kotgarh), Fagu (22kms), Kiarighat (30kms). If you do have 2 spare days in your itinery, then instead of staying at Shimla, stay at Narkanda, and visit these amazing picturesque places - Hatu peak, Thanedar, Kotgarh. There's also a lake - Tani Jubber Lake.
and while on your way back from Shimla, you can pay a visit to Kasauli (off the main highway, 11kms from Dharampur).
Are you visiting Amritsar before starting your Himachal Trip? If not there is a train from Patna to Chakkibank which could help you save a day.
You have around 4 days for the Dharamshala leg of your trip which I think is good enough.
You have around 3 days for the Manali leg which could be increased by an additional day if you take an overnight bus to Shimla.
From Shimla you can take the toy train to Kalka (booking in advance is advisable).
To give you a heads on the travel time between Dharamshala to Manali would be a 6-7 hour journey, Manali to Shimla would be a 8-9 hour journey. Manali and Shimla would be a favorite destination for Honeymooners during your time frame.
I am planning a car trip in the month of June 2012 from Delhi to Dharamsala via Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Jwalaji and Kangra. We will be two families in their own cars. I plan to reach Dharamsala in 2-3 days.

Any suggestions ?

You are staying at a great hotel if you want to relax! I hope the weather is great so that you can enjoy sitting out in the garden admiring the view.

Hire a taxi and spend the day or part of a day at Norbulingka http://www.norbulingka.org/ Have your hotel check to see that it is open before you go. There is a nice restaurant at Norbulingka in the Japanese style gardens.
If you like you can book a day long tour which will take you to Norbulingka, Kangra Fort and several other great places.
If you go to Bagsu be sure to walk up to the waterfall.
Walk to the Church of St John in the Wilderness.

You are staying a few minutes walk from the main temple. It is a great place to visit. The Kora is also just minutes walk away as well. The Kora is a lovely path through the forest which circles the main temple and the Dalai Lama’s residence. Walking the Kora is a form of prayer for Tibetans so be respectful and only follow the path in a clockwise direction. Tourists are welcome there and photography is just fine.

There is an excellent guide to the area here: www.mcllo.com

Triund is a great hike. It took me about 12 hours round trip with lots of breaks. You can catch a rickshaw to the top of Dharamkot and shave off a couple of hours. There are several chai shops along the way with simple but hearty food. The prices go up the higher you go so bring some extra rupeees
You can easily visit all these places in two days and return to Delhi.

restaurant
McLeod Ganj is also a foodies paradise. There are dozens of Tibetan and Indian resturants. There is a great Japanese restaurant down Jogibara Road called Lung Ta. Hotel Tibet is great for Chinese and Tibetan food. Kokonor has really good Italian food. Jimmy's serves Italian and more. It is similar to The Big Chill in Khan Market. So many more great places to eat in McLeod those are just a few of them.
Chonor House where you are staying has a great restaurant and you can walk up the hill behind the hotel to Pema Thang for pizza made in a wood-fired oven.
The great thing about McLeod is that everything is within walking distance.
Have a wonderful time!
Annexe Hotel
Annexe Hotel and Pema Thang are both great. They are both on a nice quiet street in the centre of town. Both are very close to Chonor House.
Annexe doesn't have a fancy website but it has a great reputation and the beds are supposed to be really comfortable. There are reviews on India Mike

Hotel Dhauladhar
I feel HPTDC's Hotel Dhauladhar at Dharamsala is better than their Hotel Bhagsu. Did you check it out?

hotel-Pema Thang
Pema Thang is a Tibetan style hotel. I loved the wood floors and the great view from my balcony. Ask for a room with a view! I could have lived there forever, really!
www.pemathang.net/index.html
I don't think you would be disapointed with either place and you can always pop over to Chonor House and have a meal or coffee and relax in the garden.

Hotel Bhaghsu

Phone Nos. are 01892-221091 and 01892-221092. The Fax is 01892-224928.
There is Hotel Bhaghsu owned by the State Government at Mcleodganj. The said Hotel has ample parking and spacious rooms. The construction is new and slightly tacky. The charges are around Rs. 1,200/- for the Double Room with 40% off-season discount. The

Hotel Tibet
Ph:01892-221587
There is also Hotel Tibet, which is right in the middle of Mcleod Ganj, near the bus stand. It is slightly smaller and the charges are around Rs. 550/- per Double Room. The Phone Nos. given on the card is 21587 but I presume that it should be now .

Ketan Lodge
Ketan Lodge on lower Jogibara the owner was nice, and @ the rate only 4500 INR monthly, there were loads of issues w/power cuts and sometimes no water for up to 3 days at a time...partly due to location I think & someone else said the house boys were just not filling water tanks etc etc
East Home Apts

I would really like to stay at East Home Apts but it's a little more than I want to pay ideally...
anyway, you get the idea! all suggestions welcome!
Hi dear, Welcome in India ,Come and visit........

Rudraksh Bhavan:
Ph:9218749440 or 9218728350
Rudraksh Bhavan', down the steps just above 'Victoria House'. I can put you in touch with the kind owner if you're interested.
I payed 4500 (Jan, Feb 09)at 'Rudraksh', and 5000 at 'Siddharth' (Nov and Dec 09). Also make sure gas is included in your final negotiated price to avoid any nasty surprises later!
A good idea is to get a local to do the bargaining on your behalf, and you'll get it cheaper!

Siddharth House'
Siddharth House: http://www.sidharthhouse.com
Another place that is good for long term stays is 'Siddharth House', next door to 'East Home'. For quiet and privacy I prefer 'Siddharth House' to 'Rudraksh'. Also, the 'Siddharth' rooms have plenty of storage, cupboards, shelves and a pleasant view . Both these places have cable TV and hot water was always abundant. In January/February 09 there were water restrictions throughout Mcleodganj, and staying at Rudraksh, I fared better than some of my friends elsewhere who had no water for showers! At least I was getting a few hours a day. Prices at both places are highly negotiable

Goodness, the prices have shot up! I doubt you'd still be able to get them to reduce down to 5000 per month including TV and gas. They will probably go down to no less than 6000. My room was one of the nicest ones. You can see it on their accommodation page: pictures number 5, 6 and 7, the room with the brown/ beige flower blanket.

Gandhi House'
Another place that is cheap and neat is 'Gandhi House', but no TV there. It is the guesthouse past the steps as you walk towards the village. Around 4000 with lovely views and private bathroom, kitchenette. Nice friendly managers too.
you can get the room between 4000 to 5000 in Bhagsu far from 2 kms from meclo as u disered.

Tashi Khangsar
Tashi Khangsar... on the way to Bhagsu near the tatoo parlor.
Tashi Khangsar for Rs. 135/- per night earlier this year in Jan. The place is run by a Tibetan family and they rent out the first floor rooms. Small rooms but cozy, hot water round the clock, western style toilets, only few rooms have attached bathrooms but hot water is there 24 hrs, no room heaters but they gave heaps and heaps of warm blankets..and i never experienced any power cuts! Kind and friendly family but they own two very friendly mongrels.. But as Cardinal Divide said.. during the low season, one can just walk around and choose a place... lots are availabl

McLeod Ganj and Dharamsala get a lot of rain during monsoon. There are rainfall statistics on the weather blog posted in the link above. There are all sorts of rooms/apartments available. The bigger apartments, that is ones with several bedrooms, tend to be below the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives but there are options in McLeod Ganj if you look around. Apartments in Mcleod Ganj are usually one room with a small kitchen and bathroom but there are differences in size and furnishings. The further down the hill from McLeod Ganj that you go, the more you get for your money because most Westerners prefer to be in McLeod as that is where most of the restaurants, shops etc are.
use ful web link
http://mcleodganj-weathergeek.blogspot.com/
Daily update on weather – I have yet to come across something similar to this for any city in India. July is going to a wet season..carry a poncho..light cottons…since it takes almost 2 days to dry your clothes in the hills.
